You can make your own pick-up sticks from many materials. Start by determining the size of your area / where you’ll be playing. This will help determine the size of your sticks.
Some ideas might include:
- Toothpicks
- Skewers
- Straws
- Doll rods
- Cardboard tubes
- PVC pipe
Tools:
- Knife or scissors
Materials:
- Sticks
- Paint and paintbrush, spray paint, etc.
- Markers
- Sanding block or similar
Steps:
Color — Decide if you’re going to do a specific quantity in certain colors or if you’re just going to have a fun variety of colors. Select the paint you’ll need. Get the quantity of sticks you need from 30-50.
Sticks — If the ends are sharp, remove them with a knife or scissors or dull with a sanding block, emery board, etc. You don’t want anyone to get hurt.
Paint — Paint the sticks depending on the version you are using. Depending on the size, you can push them into a foam block, stick them in the ground, etc. for quick painting. You can use markers on them as well.
Option — To make your sticks last longer, you can put a couple coats of polyeurothane on them.
