Mikado is a variant of pick up sticks.
With pick up sticks, you play to a set number of points. Mikado only goes for five rounds and the person with the most points wins. It makes the game faster.
You can also be penalized by not getting points for your actions if you don’t follow the rules.
Tools:
- Sticks: 41 — Blue (1), Red (15), Orange (5), Green (15), Yellow / Black (5)
Materials:
- N/A
Steps:
Into play — Hold sticks vertically on a flat surface. Allow them to fall.
Order — Determine who will start and what order the players will play.
Mikado — The Mikado (blue stick) cannot be picked up until a player has successfully obtained a stick of each color — red, orange, green and yellow / black.
Start — The first person picks up a stick without moving any of the others. When they move a stick other than the one they are picking up, they lose their turn.
Alternatively, if one of the following happens, they lose their turn and get no points for that turn:
- Picks up the Mikado without having a stick of every color
- Uses a stick other than the Mikado to pick up a stick
Points — Points for the sticks are as follows:
- Blue — 20 points
- Yellow / Black — 10 points
- Orange — 5 points
- Green — 3 points
- Red — 2 points
Total your points (minus those lost as listed in step 4).
Also, the last stick taken is not counted.
